Here’s a look at what happens between the moment you click order on our website and the moment you carry it out the door in Churchlands.
Key Takeaways
- Catering at The Herdsman Market is ordered online and collected from the Delicatessen at the rear left-hand side of the store. We don’t deliver. Everything is made for your collection time and handed over fresh.
- We ask for at least 36 hours’ notice so every platter, roast and salad is prepared fresh by the counter that knows it best, rather than in advance.
- The same specialists who serve you across the market are the ones making your order: the Cheese room and Deli Team on platters, our chefs on roasts and family meals, the Fish Merchant on seafood.
- Bigger events need a few extra days, same-day may be possible depending on what you choose, and the catering team will plan anything custom with you.
THE ORDER
What We See When You Click Order
An online catering order arrives with two things attached: what you’ve chosen and when you’re collecting. That second detail drives everything. We work back from your collection window so the food is at its best when it reaches your table, which is why 36 hours is the minimum we ask for and a few days is better for a crowd.
If something in the order needs a conversation, a dietary note, an unusual number, a platter you’d like tweaked, the catering team will reach out or you can get in first at catering@theherdsman.com.au or on (08) 9383 7733.
THE COUNTERS
Made by the People Who Serve You Every Week
Grazing platters are built by the team, the same people who cut a wedge for you on a Saturday morning, now arranging cheeses, cured meats, fresh and dried fruit and the trimmings so it’s ready to set down in front of guests. Hot roast meats are cooked by our chefs, the beef sous vide and tender, the pork crispy, with cauliflower cheese and creamy potato bake alongside. Seafood comes off the Fish Merchant’s ice, prepared and ready. Salads and fruit platters start with what WA growers delivered to the produce department that morning, and the hampers are put together from the gourmet grocery, cheese and deli shelves by people who know which jar goes with which cracker.
THE MORNING
Fresh for Your Window, Not the Day Before
Your order is prepared fresh for the collection time you booked rather than made days ahead and held. It’s a small thing, but it’s the difference between food that looks like it was made for your party and food that was.
If you’ve booked an early collection for a lunch, the market opens at 7am every day. If you’re collecting before an evening gathering, the market is open until 8pm.
THE HANDOVER
Collection at the Delicatessen
Head to the rear left-hand side of the store, give the Deli Team your name and your collection time, and the order comes out from behind the counter. This is the moment to ask anything: how long a platter can sit out, how to reheat the roast, whether to slice now or at the table. The team has answered all of it before and would rather you ask than guessed.
Most people use the walk from the Delicatessen to the door to finish the party off. A couple of loaves from the Dough Room. Olives and dips from the deli. A bunch of flowers from The Flower Market for the table. A coffee from Reverie for the drive home.
THE HOST
Your Part Is the Easy Part
Clear a shelf in the fridge before you leave home. Bring an esky in summer for seafood and cheese. Give hot food a few minutes to rest and cold platters a few minutes out of the fridge before guests arrive. Then put it on the table and take the credit.
